Cameron Hughes Wine

A few weeks ago I got to experience Cameron Hughes Wine’s “Dine with Cam” event, hosted at Park Tavern restaurant located in San Francisco’s historic North Beach district. The event featured a delicious four-course meal paired with four different Cameron Hughes Wines. Cam, the man himself, was even there to host and tell us about the wine and his new business venture that may possibly change the beef industry in the states.

If you’re not already familiar with Cameron Hughes Wine, it’s a local wine négociant (i.e., wine trader) based in San Francisco. Their main focus is to find the best wines at the right price point for their customers hence they’re able to offer exceptional wine at extraordinary value. You’ll need to get your hands on a few bottles of their wine to know what I’m talking about.

It was a wonderful evening getting to know Cameron Hughes Wine and their wine enthusiasts. We met people who’ve been with the company since Lot 5, they’re now on Lot 600+! That’s impressive and tells you a lot about how much people love their wines!

Now, onto the meal itself. The first course was seared scallops, smoke walnut and romanesco paired with the 2017 Arroyo Seco Chardonnay. The sea scallops’ oily texture complemented the acid and tropical fruit profile of the wine very well. It was crisp and buttery with a hint of oak. This wine could be paired with anything in my opinion. If you like a rich, buttery, oaky Chardonnay, this white wine would be perfect for you.

The second course was Taglioni, smoke mushroom ragout, cured egg-yolk, and age pecorino paired with the 2015 Arroyo Seco Pinot Noir. I was thoroughly impressed with this Pinot. I usually don’t drink Pinots because they’re too light for me; however, this pinot was rich and bold. It paired very well with the mushrooms and pasta. This was my second favorite wine of the night. I highly recommend this to all Pinot lovers!

The third course was seared Tajima wagyu, potato gratin, and asparagus paired with the 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. My initial thought was the wine was a little tight but after letting it sit for a little throughout the dinner, the flavors became more rich and bold. It paired very well with the wagyu and had a nice smooth finish. It’s no surprise this is my favorite pairing of the night as I’m a Cabernet and wagyu kind of girl. I suggest you let this wine sit a little before enjoying and you won’t be disappointed! I will definitely be getting a few bottles of these myself.

Finally, dessert was a citrus tarte with macerated strawberries, and whipped cream paired with the 2017 Piemonte Moscato. I’m not a dessert wine type of person but this Moscato was particularly good. I liked that it was light and not too sweet which made it very refreshing for me. It paired very well with the citrus tarte. If you love Moscato, you need to get your hands on a bottle of this!

Overall, the dinner experience was amazing and all the wines paired perfectly with every single course. Prior to this event, I didn’t know anything about Cameron Hughes Wine, so now I’m super happy to add them to my list of favorite wines. I’ve already told so many of my friends about this experience. At the end of the evening, we were all gifted a bottle of their Lot 625 Cabernet. I took the liberty to make red wine pasta the next day to pair with the Cab and it was so good. If you try out their wines, please do let me know what you think! Thank you so much for reading this blog post.
